Gold for Fools

Fool’s Gold is known and named thus because Real Gold exists and is known.

However, if one was never to touch and see the real thing and also did not know of how to recognize it or test for its authenticity, how would one ever differentiate the not-real from the real?

Furthermore, if one was never to touch and/or see the real thing, why would one believe it exists?

One could infer the existence of real gold from the nomenclature of Fool’s Gold, but you would still have to have faith in the existence of the real until you have touched, seen, or otherwise experienced the real thing.

And if one was able to verify the existence of the real thing through experience of it, then one would not need any faith or belief in its existence, because that one would have something better; knowledge.

Even then, one may have knowledge of the existence of Real Gold, but one still may not be able to differentiate the real thing from counterfeits, i.e., Fool’s Gold.

If one did want to be able to differentiate between the not-real and real, thus taking their knowledge beyond the knowing of the mere existence of the thing, one would naturally have to learn about the various attributes of Real Gold (and also likely some of the attributes of the common counterfeits) and also how to test for the presence of these attributes when attempting to differentiate between contested samples.

Before going about this learning, it should go without saying that the one attempting to learn should be actually capable of learning, rather than just assuming that one already possesses any and all necessary prerequisites, including a mind ready for said learning.

If one is really ready for learning, one could go about it in one of two ways. The first way is that one should acquire some Real Gold for themselves and intensely study it until all of the attributes become known. The second way, and the more efficient way, would be to find someone who already possesses the knowledge you seek and then beseech them to teach you.

For the first way, the difficulty lies in the obtaining. Theoretically there are many possible methods of obtaining Real Gold such as purchasing it, mining it, etc. Obviously, each method would come with its own unique difficulties. But if it exists, it must be at least possible to obtain.

For the second way, the main difficulties lie in seeking a teacher, subsequently convincing them to teach you, and you being able to learn. Teachers with this knowledge may be very hard to find. Teachers may also be hard to recognize if they are not openly advertising their knowledge. You may not be able to convince them to teach you since they are not, by default, obligated to teach anything. Additionally, you may not have the means to pay for the education if they are asking a lot in exchange for their knowledge.

And even if one achieves their aim – what now?
